View Full Version : Can't identify shifter part...
Anyone know what the part that goes in this slot is? Or better yet, know what it looks like so I can make one myself? (I have a mill in my garage)
It's from an '85 Wrangler YJ (square headlights) The tranny is a peugeot (sp) and I can't find any in the local junk yards. The Walmart :wifey: is complaining about riding her bike now that it's getting cold and wants me to fix the POS.

buckshot500 12-07-2008, 04:32 PM I searched the intrawebs exstensively, & came up with nothing.
The peugeot BA10/5 was used in YJ's from 1987 to 1989-1/2.
Does the end of the shifter have a thick square chunk, for the upper shifter to attach to?
Looking at the slot in the ball, I would think the cup parts that surround it may have some sort of tang on them that sit in the slot, to keep it from rotating.
This is just a guess though.
The French transmission, does have a reputation for being weak & prone to breakage. Widely suggested, to swap in the AX/15.:oldman:
jpnjim 12-07-2008, 05:31 PM That ball is the pivot for the shifter, and, I'm thinking, the slot indexes with a tang inside the casing of the tranny that receives the shifter.
It holds the ball centered, so it can act as a fulcrum for all the forward/backward/right & left movements.
I've had the shifters out of YJ & XJ BA 10-5's before (FWIW, YJ & XJ shifters are different, both above, and below the pivot), but it's been a while. (tossed the last of that stuff away a few years ago).
What happens when you just drop the shifter back into the tranny?
If it's locked in 2 gears at once, you have to clear it into neutral first. (BMF screwdriver usually works).

Hey Jim, funny side note. I was looking at all these pages of Ba10/5 parts & pics, & your old avatar was on one of them.:eye:lllllll:eye:
jpnjim 12-07-2008, 11:42 PM It's a small interweb I guess. :)
I did some posting in the past about those tranny's, I actually had good luck with them, even figured out how to convert a 2wd version into a 4wd.
The last foot, or so of the 2wd tailshaft is splined, chop it off, and replace the tailshaft with a 4wd rear housing.
I couldn't believe it was that easy, even when used Junk 4wd BA 10-5's were going for $700+, you could get 2wd versions for free. :jump:
I always had a couple spares layng around. :agree:
wct097 12-08-2008, 07:14 AM Yea, that's just the shift lever itself. The ball is the pivot, and you'll find it encased in the top cover. On the AX15 and NV3550s, this top cover unbolted with 4 screws and the whole assembly came out as one. You actually needed to disassemble it to get the shaft out. See part number 7 in this diagram (not for your tranny, but gives you the right idea):

Oops... that's probably just where some part of the housing mates to it to keep it from spinning within the top plate. Maybe a spring or detent of some sort sticks out into it.

If I hold the shifter in place it will shift, but I'm not about to put down my rum and coke just to drive that damn thing. :disagree:
Found this...
