4 cups 70deg room temp water in a SS boiling kettle:

at my house
Gas: 5min10sec on burner set on high

at girlfriends house
Elec: 4min20sec, kettle starting on cold burner then turned straight to high.

neither of us own or like microwaves so who's gonna show us up?

I think both gas and electric boil times will vary based upon size of burner and BTU rating....

On my gas stove I have one (up to) 15,000 BTU burner and like 2 (up to) 12,000 BTU burners and one 5k BTU simmer burner... So my boil time would vary based upon which I picked.

What SAD said... I could throw the water in my micro but then there's different wattages for microwaves like different ratings on the stove...

I believe that they have 'fast boil' electric stoves that will blow away the time it takes for gas to boild water by using direct conduction- something you don't really get with gas, at least not instantly.

That's the other thing... You obviously both have kitchens, at least 1 of you has a computer, I doubt it's a financial reason, how can neither of you have microwaves? :puzzled: Sure you don't want to put everything in one but they have their uses.

Also for your testing- you went from a pot to a kettle- big difference... You should bring the same pot from your house to hers to try it...

Also you should keep a uniform starting temperature... if you want to be 'scientific' about it do this...

Fill the pot with cold water and a bunch of ice cubes... let it sit for like 10 minutes, stiring on occasion... then fish out the ice cubes with a strainer or something so only water is left... the water will be at 32F (or local freezing temperature depending on altitude and water purity and such)... Now do your experiement at your place.

Now... take another bunch of cold water, and ice cubes from YOUR place, drive over to your gf's (at least the water will be the same) - as long as there are still ice cubes left in the water it should be at the same 32F, fish out the icecubes again and make sure you have the same amount of water left in the pot as the first time, and run experiment at girlfriend's place.

I've seen those on TOH or something along those lines .. they really heat things up fast .... and they only heat where the pot or pan touches the range ... they were touching the range top right next to the pan .. no worries.

and I believe the thing cooled off in like a second or two after the "burner" was shut off
