Had a visit this weekend from the city inspector. We had been working on the house for about a week. The inspector said he was in the area and saw my mess, thought he would stop by and check it out. Luckly, my neigbor clued me in on the fact that I did not do any electrical, did not rip down a wall, did not do any plumbing, did not move the washer and drier out to the garage. All's I've done is new cabnits, counters and floors. I did fess up to replacing the hot water heater, he latched on to that and wrote me a thing I had to take to the permits building and request a permit.
Had to pay 75 bucks for a HW permit!
I lucked out, could have been ugly. As soon as I get my place squared away I'll post pics.

A $75 permit would have increased my WH replacement by 8 fold. WTF would you need a permit to replace an appliance? Hot, Cold, Gas. WTF?

I'm sure you can get a permit for most anything ... I thought it was mostly on the value of what you were doing ?

thats the excuse I tell the wife .... (If I spread this project over the next 2 years .. I won't need a permit" ... :jump:

The world would be better if all these commie inspectors ceased to be.

They told me when I got the permit to call and set up an appointment and they will come check it. Well this guy shows up thur and said somebody called and set up the appointment?! Showed the guy the hw heater and he said it was fine. Oh well.

I pulled a permit when I dug my sewer lines...and I only did that because it is difficult to hide a 120' long, 3' deep and 1' wide trench running through my front yard. All other "work" has been done without pulling permits.

I have never heard of an inspector just walking up to a house because he believed unauthorized work was being done.

I would have probably told him to go fawk himself.

Agreed.

I ripped out my entire driveway, tore down my deck, repoured a driveway almost twice as large, put in a two-tiered retaining wall with a paver patio and never sought a permit. I live a block (at best) away from our city building.

If someone had come in my house and said something about a new water heater I would have said "the old one was spewing water all over the basement... where were you at the time... I could have used a hand"

I refuse to pay permits to improve MY property.

Just tell them "I got some sort of a busted drain tile around here and we are having to dig up the whole f****** property to find it?!?!?!"

I'm supposed to get a demolition permit to take down the carport. I should just say it blew down in the hurricane.
