Ok, I have to ask, why 16G ram minimum and a plan to upgrade to 32G in a year? Are you doing some intense huge photo manipulations, or rendering complex 3D movies or running virtual machines? Why 750G minimum HD? Unless you are keeping your entire DVD/Bluray movie collection on your laptop or have a ginormous pr0n collection I don't see how you could use more than a couple hundred G of disk space.

I'm running 4G ram and 500G HD on my desktop, I never run out of RAM and my HD is under 30% full.
I run VMs and that takes RAM, processor, and lots of HDD space. My MBP has a 512gb drive and is about 75% full despite the fact I've deleted all of my music and most of the videos.

That's why I asked if Joe was running VMs (or a couple other things). There are only a handful of tasks that require as much memory/disk space as he listed as his minimums.

Disk space, though is easy to eat up if you're a digital packrat. My opinion is that if you're buying a new machine, you should buy as much as possible so as to allow for future needs.

40 to 60 browser tabs open at any one time across 3 or 4 different browsers, plus photo editing, plus video download, plus the occasional game.

40-60 browser tabs is unreasonable in my opinion. Doesn't seem like it would be managable. When I get 10+ open, I just start closing stuff.

Update:

The computer had been running great until the other day- not a major issue but the 'o' key began sticking down. I figured I would give it a good cleaning and it would be fine.

Unfortunately that didn't help. Even removed the key, it's not dirt. The rubber that pushes it back up has worn.

It appears to be a common problem on their own support forums-

Key stuck on keyboard

Now we'll see how well their support handles the situation.

OMG, Joey wore out the O key. Too much porn. :)

Just FYI, when you watch porn and you cum, you do NOT have to mash the O key on the keyboard.

Too bad you didn't buy a high end, quality machine. If they don't fix it, I hope you bought on an Amex. :applejump:

A bit nutty
I like my Lenovo Y510P with dual graphics cards, and otherwise similar specs to what you posted about yours, for $950

IBM/Renovo ChinkPads are not cheap, but they still keep going, and going, and going...

Mine is >6 years old and gets hauled everywhere; staying with Windoze 7, but also dual-boot Ubuntu. Good stuff.

My logic board may have failed, but that's a design flaw and not just shoddy construction like you're dealing with. Apple > Asus.
