I'm not sure it's a different as you think. "I believe in Jesus" vs. "I believe in the idea of Jesus."

I'd say a substantial difference.
More like "I believe Jesus was the son of god" vs "I agree with what the man named Jesus advocated."
"I believe that going along with the belief Jesus is the son of God makes people's lives better and this world would be a better place of more people accepted it."
That's how the libs feel about global warming or climate change or whatever they're calling it these days.
