Why should you care? If you've been wanting a Fire TV and want to play games with it / add hardware or software to it / or use an Ethernet cord, this is by far the best model to have.

Amazon's Fire TV3 turned out to be just a more powerful version of their 2nd Generation Fire TV Stick but still less powerful than the Original Fire TV box and an awkward design. Worse, it has no ports for expanded memory or USB devices, or Ethernet, you need a bunch of cables to split the micro USB port used for power to add any of these.

The Fire TV 2 Box has dedicated Ethernet, built in WiFi, microSD card (up to 200GB) for extra storage, as well as a dedicated full size USB port for peripherals or additional drives. Plus, by the specs, it is the most powerful Fire TV device ever created including onboard H.265 decoding (the FireTV 1 box only has H.264 deciding meaning H.265 content needs to be run through the main processor, which isn't terrible but much better to have a dedicated decoder.)

The unfortunate fact is there is not likely to be another Fire TV 3rd generation device anytime soon and even if it does come up rumors are it will be paired an an Echo Dot (seems a waste) and/or have lower specs than the Fire TV 2 box so it can be cheaper. Amazon has a history of reducing the specs on later generations of their hardware, which they did with their tablets.

But the refurbished Fire TV 2 boxes are in stock right now for $85. New Fire TV 2 boxes are selling on eBay for almost double that.

The bottom line is the Fire TV 2 box is by far the best value for your money for an Android based TV box with a growing number of apps.
