IP Camera Monitoring Software

Anyone use anything good? A Google Search found me this: IP Camera Viewer - Free IP Camera Monitoring Software - DeskShare

While it displays OK the PTZ controls are awful when using this with my FOSCAM cameras.

FOSCAM itself has failed to release a secure Chrome extension to allow continued use with Google Chrome and the current NPAPI plugin will die shortly as Google is removing support for it from Chrome. Likely next time Chrome restarts I'll lose access, but even if not then, soon.

Of course I'd prefer a free app but I'd be willing to pay something for a well designed app that allows for fast Pan and Tilt movement similar to using it via the camera's own web interface right now.

I bought a Synology NAS device that I have been playing with, its pretty cool with its online portion and ability to control some Foscam Cameras

Just a word of advice: Do your research carefully. Like most "Internet of things" devices, the underlying code of appliances is Java, and it is never, ever under any circumstances patched by the vendor. They ship it and are done.

And Java is a security wreck.

I've even seen good Axis cameras get popped with auth bypasses and other vulnerabilities that turn your IP camera into a window for the outside world.

Anything running on a PC is going to be subject to the security risks inherent with the OS - if the OS is popped, the camera will be used against you.

This goes back almost 20 years to Back Orifice being used on popped computers, there are dozens of pictures of dorks stroking out to porn while their webcams unwittingly sent the video to attackers.

I use ZoneMinder. It's a Linux only product and I don't know how it compares to other products, but it's free and does what I want it to.

Only one I've ever worked with is Axis camera companion. It was good for sharing information between a handful of cameras in several emergency centers.

iSpy isn't bad but I'm not getting the framerate I get i the browser so it looks jerky compared to what I see now.

Joe, I've got a demo on a thumb drive I can mail you if you like. It's for Digital Watchdog.

If you need it, just let me know. I've got a spare I can let go of. It's pretty good software.

Damn, that stinks. Yeah it's a great program...shit-ton of features.

If I remember right, when you export a clip (like if you needed to give "evidence" to cops) it embeds the full player on the flash drive or whatever too. So then they have the same full functionality as the original program.

In truth it's way overkill as I record to SD cards in each camera- I don't need recording ability through the software, just a viewer.

OK, have a "work-around" for the fact FOSCAM cameras require NPAPI support and Google Chrome has removed NPAPI support as of version 45.

Instead I have downloaded a portable version of Chromium web browser- which is very similar to Google Chrome.

You can download a portable .exe file from: Chromium Portable - Browse PackedLauncher at SourceForge.net

I downloaded 39.0.2145.4.exe which is from 2014 and still includes NPAPI support.

It's portable so you only need run the one EXE file.

The browser opens, it looks like an old version of Chrome and works like it.

I only use it to view my cameras- it would not be safe to use to view other websites because it is old.

You must enable popups for each camera you attempt to connect to. Once enabled it works fine- assuming you have previously installed the plugins and it was working with Chrome it will now work fine with old Chromium,

One of the Foscams died yesterday. Looking to replace it... Going to have to look at software again.
