Atlas Shrugged

Atlas Shrugged Part 1

Saw it last night, we were by far the youngest people in the small theater. I think the running time is just under 2 hours but it went by pretty fast. It generally seemed to follow the book, but lacked so much of the flashbacks and character development. I wouldn't rate it highly unless you enjoyed the book and wanted to visually relive some of the key scenes. The casting and acting were fine.

I gave up long before I ever finished the book.

I cannot even imagine what incredible punishment the movie must be.

It has its merits, and deserves to be studied, to pass it off as retarded is well retarded :)

Don't be silly. The world is analogous to a trip in a car on the highway. Anyone going faster than you is a maniac. Anyone going slower is a moron. Those going the same speed are just sheep. Ego is king.

This.

I'm hardly an Objectivist, I don't think *anyone* is, except Rand herself, and she's dead. I love how Jimmy Wales of Wikipedia fame calls himself an Objectivist but asks for hand-outs to float Wikipedia each year. :rotflmao:

Rand was dead-on about how self-interest in a reasoned person resulted in behaviors that are indirectly helpful to fellow man. She laid out plausible situations where the best of intentions and .gov interference were inevitably accompanied by cronyism that corrupted all while restricting growth and making matters significantly worse. She is likely laughing in her grave today.

That being said, she found no charity in her blood, and gave nothing of her own free will. Her views on religion were fundamentalist and the lead character in her book shot a man for being indecisive about doing his job - I found nothing there to support, and you could infer her nose rising as she typed it, and you read it.

Mostly, though, reading her sex scenes could make a teenage boy on Viagra limp as a wet noodle. As a woman, she was beyond creepy :barf:

Is the movie super heavy on dialog? I don't see how it could attempt to get the objectivism message across without lots dialog between characters.

I would rather see a Fountainhead movie. Same basic idea and at least the trains would keep things a little more interesting.

I wonder if Atlas Shrugged Part Nine (or whatever the last installment will be called) will be filmed in Ouray?

I still want to know the answer to this.
i had to sit with 3 rich ass kids 10 years younger than me about a decade ago and argue that a lot of her core logic statements were incorrect..yes there were interesting points she raised ..but the basis for her system of belief was flawed.

my end argument was that nothing is absolutely objective about man's experience in or of the world...that we are subjective by the very essence of our nature..or something along those lines..i was a decde ago..but this arguement came up in this same rich town with it rcih kids every few months while i worked up there

It really doesn't get the message across. Without the character development it will only be a homage for those that read and enjoyed the book. Think of it as a sampler platter of some of the key scenes- no possible way to go deeper in movie format. It really should have been a mini-series for TV to even come close to matching the impact of the book. It is true to the book but falls way short in its impact.

Rand was *not* a great story teller. As a story in itself, Atlas Shrugged is just plain awful. The characters are extreme and unbelievable, and each is really more a metaphor than a human being.

If the director could get past that and make the characters more "human" so the average Joe could identify with them, he will have done a great service.

For all the flaws in Objectivism and her story telling, her work is important and more timely today than it ever has been.
