I have never had a need for one, jack up on vehicle cross-member and support each side of frame with jack stands.

Anything between jack and vehicle greatly increases the chance for tip over. It's happened to me. I don't have the space for one of those commercial floor jacks that goes really high or does frame lifts. Best I can do is a floor jack. My floor jacks both don't have the lift to get the XJunk high enough to use the frame stands. No idea how I did it on the CJ. Color me baffled.

Is it rated at two tons at 27" only or two tons across its spread capacity?

Probably at the narrow point. Given my plans for it, not an issue.
