Thu, June 9, 2011: Random Mahjong Pro (Ad-Free)

Today's free Amazon android app of the day for Thu, June 9, 2011 is Random Mahjong Pro (Ad-Free)!

Application Description:

Just when you thought Mahjong had been covered, along comes a stylish new solitaire Mahjong game ready to take centre stage on the Android platform. Random Mahjong Pro looks incredible on tablets while still managing to stay visually sharp and play great on smartphones.

Each game may be played in landscape or portrait mode

Develop your own games with the custom mode

The game uses a unique, random-board generator. This means that every time you fire up your Android and start a game, a fresh challenge awaits. The levels can be as small as 32 tiles, or as large as 152 tiles. You can play a sequence of expanding boards (with Score, Levels and Lives), or use the random generator to build a custom level to fit your needs.

Tiles Ready!

With Random Mahjong Pro, you have full control over the look and feel of your games, whether you're a mahjong master or a someone that's brand new to the game. Choose to zoom in and scroll as much as you need during play and adjust the size and complexity of the levels. You can also look over the game guides and take a peek at the move hints option to bolster your learning during play.

For beginners there's the small, 32-tile level. For every level, there's a solution walkthrough corresponding with each board. The combination serves as a perfect teaching tool for the game's basic rules and logic, especially to anyone who has not played the solitaire or Shanghai variant of mahjong before.

Game With a Past

The origins of mahjong are steeped in equal parts myth and historical speculations. On the mythical side of the debate is the legendary Chinese philosopher Confucius. Some have ventured he developed the game about 2,500 years ago in 500 BC.

On the historical side, there's a theory that states Chinese army officers serving during the Taiping Rebellion created the game to pass the time. Another theory holds that a nobleman living in the Shanghai area created the game between 1870 and 1875. Also, there are those who believe that two brothers from Ningpo used the earlier game madiao to create mahjong around 1850.

One thing that's sure, though, is the repression the game received when the People's Republic of China too power in 1949. The new communist government forbade gambling because of its symbolic tie to capitalist corruption. However, after the Cultural Revolution, the game was revived, minus the gambling, and the communists officially revoked its prohibition in 1985. Mahjong has survived and thrived because of its universally appealing strategy and luck. Today, the game is a favorite pastime in China and in Chinese-speaking communities around the world.

Sun, June 12, 2011: Grow

Today's free Amazon android app of the day for Sun, June 12, 2011 is Grow!

Application Description:

Detailed aquatic graphics

You are a little fish with a big appetite and dreams of becoming a whopper. And so, you eat. And eat and eat and eat. And eventually, you Grow.

Big Fun

This is not your typical fishy game, where you mindlessly tap on the screen to feed your pet fish and wait for it to get bigger. In Grow, you are the fish, and you're trying to munch your way to the top of the aquatic food chain while avoiding becoming lunch yourself.

It's either chomp or be chomped

Impressive Visuals

The first thing you notice about Grow is the quality graphics. The creatures and environments are designed with imagination and feature impressive detail. The second thing that jumps out at you is the smooth controls, whether you choose the virtual joystick or the touch-and-drag option to move your fish around. Haptic feedback gives you that satisfying extra crunch. The look and feel alone make this app worth the price of admission.

It's a Fish-Eat-Fish World

Soon, however, you'll be caught up in Grow's addicting gameplay. Start out in Adventure mode to get a feel for the game. Your mission is quite simple--eat the small and medium-sized fish and avoid the big, ugly ones such as the puffer and angler fish. It's pretty easy to spot the bad guys because they sport red warning rings. The more you eat, the bigger you get.

A bar at the top of the screen gauges your progress--when it's full, you move on to the next level. You have a choice between Normal and Advanced difficulty settings, so you can challenge yourself as you get bigger and better.

Beware the fearsome puffer fish

Collect power-ups like the deadly fish hook

Survival of the Fittest

Once you're feeling confident, it's time to switch to Survival mode. You begin life as a tiny egg in a cramped jar. Your goal is the deep blue sea. Advance through 64 different levels and seven fun environments by collecting points and gold coins. A multiplier effect helps you score big.

Grab the floating power-ups to give yourself bonus skills and attributes, or buy them in the official store with your coins. Record your high score for each level and share your achievements on Facebook. If you're a whale of a player you might swim your way up the global scoreboard.

We dare you--just try to resist this game. The premise may be simple, but you can't look away. And if you do--Crunch! Chomp! Gulp! Your growth is terminated.

Thu, June 16, 2011: Watchdog Task Manager

Today's free Amazon android app of the day for Thu, June 16, 2011 is Watchdog Task Manager!

Application Description:

Watchdog app manager

Know what's going on

Don't Kill Them: Manage Them

Stop blindly killing your running apps. Be smart; manage them with Watchdog instead.

You don't need a task killer. You do need a way to make sure a background app doesn't lose control and eat up your smartphone's CPU resources.

How it Works

Watchdog monitors your apps and alerts you when one slows your system, allowing you to kill just that single app. Killing apps blindly can cause them to stop working as designed, and most app developers won't even take a bug report from you if you are using a task killer. And since Android 2.2, the kill command works only on background apps, which will likely restart immediately. Having lots of apps running doesn't adversely affect your phone unless they are all doing something. In fact, killing an app and immediately restarting it simply consumes your phone's resources.

Stop killing your apps randomly. Start monitoring them with Watchdog.

Good for all versions of Android.

Tue, June 21, 2011: Peggle (WiFi Download Only)

Today's free Amazon android app of the day for Tue, June 21, 2011 is Peggle (WiFi Download Only)!

Application Description:

Exclusive Launch at the Amazon Appstore for Android

Please note: Peggle requires a Wi-Fi connection to download

Do you have what it takes to be a Peggle Master? Shoot and clear all the orange pegs in this peg-busting, critically acclaimed game, now fully optimized for Android devices. You'll reach Extreme Fever as ten outlandish Masters help you achieve Peggle greatness. Take your best shot, conquer 55 levels, and wield ten magic powers in Adventure mode--and the fun is just getting started.

Shoot and slide your way to Peggle Mastery

Catch the Fever

Whenever a ball hits a peg, it bounces away in the opposite direction at the same angle. Double-tap the screen to zoom in and fine-tune your shots for perfect aim, then fire! When you hit a peg, it disappears as soon as the ball falls out of play.

Access your gameplay options at any time from any level, and switch from right- to left-handed control. The cleverly designed colorblindness setting--which adds a triangle on the green pegs and a plus sign on the purple pegs--is a compelling and useful feature for all players, as a quick glance gives you a Zen-like grasp of a level's most important pegs (just ask Master Hu).

Helpful Tips from the PopCap Team:

Try to hit the purple pegs in as many of your shots as possible (they're 50 times more valuable than the blue pegs)Clear all the pegs on the board to guarantee 100,000 pointsIf the going gets tough, hit one peg at a time and land each shot in the Free Ball Bucket

These Grand Masters have got you pegged

Meet the Masters

If you've made it through Adventure mode, congratulations--you're a Peggle Master. But there's a lot more Peggle to play. To succeed in dueling and beat the 75 Grand Master Challenges, you'll need to summon all the strategies and skills you've learned along the way and choose the most helpful master.

Are there a lot of tricky pegs? Are there lots of obstacles to maneuver around? Are the pegs evenly distributed? Are the pegs clustered close together? To choose a master, take a look at the level and decide on its most challenging aspect. Remember, there's no timer, so there's no need to rush. Think through your options, make a plan, and fire when ready.

It's a compelling blend of luck and skill that msnbc.com calls one of the "Top 5 most addictive video games of all time!" Deceptively simple, unbelievably fun, Peggle's a game you can't put down. But with Amazon's exclusive launch for Android phones, you can play Peggle wherever you go.

Product Reviews

"An ode to joy is exactly what Peggle is. It's a constant series of rewards, slapping you on the back and tickling you affectionately under the chin for what you achieve by design and accident alike--the purest of celebrations of what videogames are all about. It's nonviolent, very funny, incredibly charming and gently asks more of your brain than reflex. Peggle is always there, and always just-one-more-go." 9/10 - Alec Meer, EuroGamer

"When it comes to puzzle games, there's Peggle, and then there's everything else. It's got a wry sense of humor, a solid presentation, hours upon hours of content, perfectly balanced and nuanced gameplay, a great learning curve, excellent controls... and anyone can play it. Don't miss this one, folks." - Steve Palley, SlideToPlay.com & GameSpot

"Honestly, I'm not sure who is responsible for more lost productivity in the U.S. each year, PopCap or rolling brownouts. Games often lose something when they're ported over to a hand-held platform, but Peggle only gets better." - Daniel S. Evans, PCMag.com
