The Spitfire was a WW2 fighter plane designed by RJ Mitchell that was able to keep the German's from dominating the skies over England during the war. While Lego doesn't release "fighter planes" this model has been redesigned into a racer that should pass Lego's no war toys test.
The Spitfire holds a special place in my heart. My former boss, Sidney E. Frank. an eccentric billionaire philanthropist, donated big money to have a statue of RJ Mitchell created for the London Science Museum in 2005. About 20 of us went to London with him for a couple weeks in 2005 for its dedication. It was a big deal- he was interviewed on their news. RJ Mitchell didn't get much official recognition for his brilliant design while he was alive. Surely had he lived longer he would have been knighted but they do not award knighthoods posthumously. There was considerable pressure to change this, just for him.
Seeing this spectacularly detailed Spitfire Lego model I am sure Mr. Frank would have been a supporter- and while I don't have the billions of dollars he had I will do my best to back it and find more supporters.
