Well my Buffalo Link Station looks like it is dead. I spent 2 days trying to get the drive back online but it's stuck in "EM Mode" which means it's not booting from the drives... The remedy is to re-flash it but of course the flash utility won't connect. It sees the drive on the network but can't access it.

I posted a support request on Buffalo's forums but 24+ hours now with no response. I'm sure the answer is, It's dead, Jim. 3 or 4 years old with 4 drives raided together to make 1 big drive... it was a matter of time I guess.

So now looking at this:
Amazon.com: QNAP TS-110 1-Bay Portable Network Attached Storage: Electronics

Single drive solution, I can buy a 2TB drive to put in it, will let me stream to Xbox and PS3, plus has plenty of space to do a full backup of all PCs on my home network.

I still have an online backup on iDrive but I prefer to have a local backup too.

Anyone else using something better?

Should eliminate the need for USB 3. Now you can get a MBP.

Got the one I mentioned in the first post setup last night- so far so good- nice interface, decent speed although it's my wifi that is slowing me down. I have about 200 GB to backup to it and it's looking like it will take a full 48 to 72 hours.

I *thought* I set the backup to start last night but apparently I didn't set the path... I backed up my C drive TO my C driv... when I woke up I had only 1.8 MB (yes Mega-Bytes) of HD space left on my 360 GB drive. :naw:

Never noticed before but this NAS has the option to RAID1 to an external disk, so ordered a 2TB external drive that will connect via eSATA... Hopefully it mirrors automatically once I enable it.

Coming up on 4 years with this NAS, only a matter of time before the main drive goes. Although everything is backed up elsewhere (or just not that important) it would be annoying to have to start from scratch again.

ReadyNAS104 was a good bargain. 4 drive bays, good performance.

I solved a wireless transfer problem by surveying the wifi noise in my neighborhood - pretty crowded on a couple of channels. Works great now.
