I've had a generator for a long time, but it's a portable one, doesn't run the entire house and is a PITA to setup, and Mom won't store any gas here... But if it is a long, localized blackout we should be OK.

mine is portable as well but it will water pump as well as the fridge, sump pump, TV's and innergore. The best part was that it seems to last about 10 hours/tank of gas
