Are you really all of a sudden having problems getting people to read the sticky threads? Just put a red ! in there and be done with it, IMO. It'll grab attention and not be overbearing. Either that or if possible make the thread title show up in red when there are unread posts in a sticky thread.
How about now? Just an "S" in the box.
