I have nevar put anyone on my ignore list, seems like a cowardly thing to do.

I've used it as a filtering tool. When certain members were on an obnoxious streak, I put them on ignore so I'm not as easily going to see idiocy. When they returned to normal, I cleared them from the list.

But there is a merit in making a person seem to disappear.

if you go to 'edit options' in the user cp you can restrict who sends you PM's to only your contacts (and mods/admins)- but it means you need to specify everyone who you want PMs from... no way to block specific members.
