Amazingly the NAPA by my old place would repair the front unit bearing assemblies. The got the bearings from Timken and would rebuild them. Cost half of what a replacement cheapo Autozone set cost.
But yes, most stuff is now disposable. Thus the lack of need for a real mechanic.
